Jehovah-Jireh, The God Who Provides

Years ago when I studied Philippians for the first time in depth, I fell in love with the joy that explodes from the pages of this Epistle! The entire book reminds us that joy really can be our life anthem, even as life here on earth brings hard struggles.

Lately, life has felt extra hard at times, but God does what God always does; He provides. Philippians 4 reminds us to rejoice always and be anxious about nothing. Paul tells us to let our requests be made known to God and a peace that surpasses all understanding will become our guard, our shield in this battle on earth. When we fix our thoughts on the things of God, we really can face any struggle Satan sends our way.

In verse 19-20, Paul writes, “My God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.” In the midst of life’s hardships, we really can find joy; God really does provide. And the provision is less about us and more about His glory.

I remember my years earlier in life when finances were tight, but as God asked me to step out in faith and trust Him to provide, I reluctantly agreed and watched him bless me beyond imagination. I really cannot account practically for how it all worked out, but I think that is the point. God worked it out, just like He always does.

As Mission III approaches our next school year with a budget that we haven’t yet met to be able to operate at full capacity, I find myself revisiting all the Ebenezers God has provided along my way in this life. Over and over again, He has shown up and supplied my every need, and I pray earnestly that every time He did so, I gave Him the glory. I also know He will do it again.

Do I need to be anxious about our budget? God provides. Do I need to be anxious about failing health in so many whom I love? God provides. Do I need to allow the worries of this world to distract me from all He has to show me?

A song called “We Dance” resonates. It says, “Take the lead and I will follow. Finally ready now to close my eyes and just believe that You won’t lead me where You don’t go. . . And I will lock eyes with the One who’s ransomed me, the One who gave me joy for mourning.”

He truly is the source of all Joy; He truly is the God who Provides…Jehovah-Jireh, we trust in You!
