September 2026: Ministry Moments with Ms. Mariah

It’s September, and things at Mission 3 are in full swing! We’ve already been in school for a

month and are about to take our first midterms. We are all finding our rhythms and marveling at the grace of God and His kindness to us each step of the way.

This month, let’s look at where a student’s journey begins – Kindergarten and 1st grade. I am especially excited to share about this class because it is the one I serve in.

One of the unique blessings and challenges of K/1 is that students enter the class with limited or no prior knowledge of what school is like. This makes establishing a routine and setting expectations a top priority right from the start. We’ve worked hard to do just that. It was very evident this week that the students have acclimated to the classroom and each other. Since they are more comfortable and more open, in many ways the invitation to get to know them has just been extended. I know this shift will bring more opportunities to correct and reinforce

what they’ve learned. However, this shift will also bring those moments of connection with students that we pray for as teachers.

I see the ministry of K/1 as having two main objectives. First, to give the students a sound

Biblical basis to build from. If nothing else happens in class, we will spend time in the Word. This

was the one rule I made for myself last year when I started in this role. Bible time requires a

lot of prayer and study, because these kids ask the biggest, best questions! I endeavor always

to give them a Biblically faithful and direct answer, even if that means simply saying, “I don’t

know, but I’ll look into it.” Second, I aim to give students a sound educational foundation to build

on. This priority includes thorough reviews of the basics of phonics and math, as well as developing the basics of teamwork, sharing, and other life skills.

We are looking forward to continuing what has started to be a great year in K/1!
